Day 19: Jesus’ Power

One of the primary ways God is drawing Muslims to Himself is through simple Bible studies that highlight passages of scripture from Creation through the Resurrection. The Waha app (https://waha.app/) contains many story sets that have been translated into dozens of languages. Throughout the 30 days we will pray through these story sets that reveal Jesus, the Word made flesh.

As you read these familiar passages, prayerfully imagine what it would be like to read them for the first time – to see the wisdom, power, beauty, and authority of God and to be drawn to trust in Christ and yield your allegiance to Him.

Pray for your people and place according to what God shows you for today’s scripture:

Mark 4:35-5:20

And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea. And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was possessed with the devil, and also concerning the swine. And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts. And when he was come into the ship, he that had been possessed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him. Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.

What this passage teaches us about God

Jesus’ authority extends over nature.

  • Pray for the people of this place to turn to Jesus, the One with authority over both the literal and metaphorical storms in life.

Jesus also has authority over evil spirits.
  • Pray for every spiritual pact people in this land have made under folk Islam to be broken in the name of Jesus.
  • Pray for Muslims who rely on offering sacrifices at the graves of dead ‘saints’ to receive blessings. Pray for all of the effects of charms, pins sewn into clothing, wall hangings, and superstitious incantations to be broken in the name of Jesus. Pray for people in this land to experience the freedom of Jesus.

What this passage teaches us about humanity

This passage teaches us how prone humanity is to respond in fear instead of living in faith. Jesus’ disciples were afraid of the storm. The people of the Gerasenes were afraid of the demoniac, then they were afraid of his healing.

  • Pray for the power of fear to be broken in the lives of the people in this place.
  • Pray for Christians who are still living in fear to experience the freedom that Jesus came to give them. Pray that they would be encouraged and empowered to walk in faith instead.
  • Pray for the lost who are in bondage to the fear of eternal damnation when asking questions, thinking critically, reading the Bible, or exploring the claims of Christ. Pray for these bonds to be broken, for faith to grow in them that Jesus is exactly who He says He is in the New Testament.

Insight into how this passage connects to Muslims

Though it may be contrary to official Islamic doctrine, throughout the Muslim world, many people enter into the spiritual realm to seek blessing, protection, and success from spirits. Sarra had made a pact with one of these spirits to help her succeed in her studies. When she met a Christian and started going to their small home church, the spirit she made a pact with didn’t like it. Eventually, she found that she was failing in school. She decided grades and success in school were of greater worth than Jesus and walked away from Him and from her Christian family. The small house church would continue to pray for her even though she wasn’t in attendance. She sensed their prayers and would call someone in the group and tell them to stop praying for her. A couple of years later, the unrelenting grace of Jesus that wouldn’t give up on her won her heart and she repented and turned back to Him. Pray for many, many more stories of freedom for the people of this land. May there be multitudes who would testify to Jesus’ power and boundless grace.

Insight into how to pray this passage for Christians reaching Muslims in this location

Right now there are Christians in this land who are facing intense storms in life: threats from family members, the possibility of losing children, financial uncertainty, unemployment, and being thrown in prison because of their faith in Christ. There are also believers facing storms because of the fallen world we live in: cancer, depression, underemployment, strained relationships, and loneliness.

  • Pray for Jesus’ words, “Peace! Be still!” to comfort them in their storms and to grow faith in their hearts. Pray that the peace of Christ would be strongly felt by them today and each day.

Related scriptures to pray for this people

Today we pray Ephesians 6:10-20 for our brothers and sisters among this people — that they would be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. May they put on the whole armor of God that they would be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

May the people of this land take up the whole armor of God, that they would be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. May they stand, therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth and having put on the breastplate of righteousness. And as shoes for their feet, put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.

In all circumstances may the people of this land take up the shield of faith with which they can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one. Put the helmet of salvation firmly on their heads and the sword of the Spirit in their hands, which is the Word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit with all prayer and supplication.

So Lord, to this end, keep us alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints. We pray for our brothers and sisters in this land that words would be given to them to open their mouths boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel.
