Day 29: The Resurrection

One of the primary ways God is drawing Muslims to Himself is through simple Bible studies that highlight passages of scripture from Creation through the Resurrection. The Waha app (https://waha.app/) contains many story sets that have been translated into dozens of languages. Throughout the 30 days we will pray through these story sets that reveal Jesus, the Word made flesh.

As you read these familiar passages, prayerfully imagine what it would be like to read them for the first time – to see the wisdom, power, beauty, and authority of God and to be drawn to trust in Christ and yield your allegiance to Him.

Pray for your people and place according to what God shows you for today’s scripture:

John 20:11-31

But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre, And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her. Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Luke 24:50-52

And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

What this passage teaches us about God

  • God raised Jesus from the dead just as He promised. Pray for Muslims in to be counted among those who have not seen and yet have believed in the resurrection of Jesus.
  • Who was the first eye witness of Jesus’ resurrection? It was Mary. Her role in this story honors and elevates a woman in a culture where a woman’s testimony in court would not have been considered meaningful. Pray for women in this land to be led to faith in Christ through knowing how deeply they are loved and valued by God.

What this passage teaches us about humanity

The response of the disciples in this passage highlights how humanity often reacts in the face of danger. The disciples were locked in a room together out of fear. Jesus came to them and repeatedly said, “Peace be with you.” Pray that despite the fear that keeps Muslims from asking questions about their religion and discovering what the Bible says, they would sense the peace of Jesus inviting them to follow Him.

Insight into how this passage connects to Muslims

Pray for the purpose of John’s book, stated in verses 30 and 31, to be realized among Muslims in this place. “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you have life in his name.”

Pray for Muslims to have both the opportunity and the desire to read this account and that it would cause them to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Thank God for the many Muslims who come to know Jesus through miracles, but pray for multitudes who have not seen, and yet will still believe.

Insight into how to pray this passage for Christians reaching Muslims in this location

When Saidia was a little girl she heard the words of Jesus on a radio broadcast. She loved what she heard and so she asked for a Bible to be mailed to her home. Her father received the Bible in the mail. Fearful that she would get in big trouble, she said nothing about where it came from, and her father kept it. Years passed and she continued to be interested in learning about Jesus. When her husband left her for another woman, though, she became desperate for Him. She cried out to Him and He came to her in a dream, filling the room with light. He called her to follow Him. One can imagine Him saying, “Saidia,” just as He did to Mary.

Pray for many Muslims in this place to be visited by God and to choose to follow Jesus. Pray they would be like Mary – people who go and announce to their friends, “I have seen the Lord.”

Related scriptures to pray for this people

We pray according to 1 Peter 1:8-9 for our brothers and sisters in this land. Though they have not seen Jesus with their physical eyes, may they love him. Though they do not now see Him, they believe in Him. May they increasingly rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of their faith, the salvation of their souls.

1 Corinthians 15:17, 19 and 22 remind us that if Christ has not been raised, our faith is futile and we remain in our sins. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. But we rejoice in the truth that Christ has been raised from the dead. Strengthen our brothers and sisters here to take hope in this. Capture the hearts of Muslims with the truth of the resurrection, and that in Christ, all shall be made alive.
